What is Cervical Cancer? | Dr.Rahul Kulkarni (Cervical Cancer Specialist, Pune)
Cervical cancer starts in the cells lining the cervix -- the lower part of the uterus (womb). The cervix connects the body of the uterus (the upper part where a fetus grows) to the vagina (birth canal). Cancer starts when cells in the body begin to grow out of control.
Cervical cancer is most often diagnosed between the ages of 35 and 44.
Treatment of cervical cancer depends on the stage of cervical cancer-
a) Stage 1 and early stage 2 cervical cancer is best treated by surgery
b) Late-stage 2b, stage 3, and locally advanced cervical cancer are best treated with a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy
